Also, fangen wir einmal so an: das letzte Mal, dass ich ein Handarbeitsprojekt so gehasst habe wie dieses Paar Socken, das war im Handarbeitsunterricht in der Schule. Als das Fach endlich nicht mehr im Lehrplan war, habe ich bestimmt 15 Jahre lang nichts angeguckt, was auch nur entfernt mit Stoff oder Nadeln zu tun hatte.

So, let me start like this: the last time I hated a needlework project as much as this pair of socks was in needlework class at school. When the subject was no longer compulsory, I certainly didn’t look at anything for 15 years that even remotely had anything to do with fabric or needles.

 

Ich weiß, es heißt nicht umsonst SockMadness. Theoretisch sind zwei Wochen Zeit, um ein Paar Socken nach dieser Anleitung zu stricken (und wie ich schon geschrieben habe, exakt ganz genau nach dieser Anleitung). Aber bei mir in der Gruppe wurde ein ordentliches Tempo vorgelegt und ich begann Panik zu bekommen. Ich mag Stranded Knitting einfach nicht, mir schmerzt schnell die linke Hand (man muss zwei Fäden gleichzeitig halten und das führt zu einer etwas starren Fingerhaltung). Über das lange  Bein hatte ich ja letztes Mal schon geschrieben – sage und schreibe 32 cm beträgt die Länge.

I know it’s called SockMadness for a reason. Theoretically, there are two weeks to knit a pair of socks according to the patterns (and as I wrote, exactly following the pattern). But in my group, a fast tempo was set and I started to panic. I don’t like stranded knitting, my left hand hurts quickly (you have to hold two threads at the same time and this leads to a somewhat rigid finger position). I wrote about the long  leg last time – the length is 32 cm.

Von den 38 Plätzen in meiner Gruppe für die nächste Runde füllten sich mehr und mehr – schnell war die Hälfte weg und dann jedes Mal, wenn ich nachgeschaut habe, war wieder ein Platz besetzt. Drei über den Verlauf eines Tages, am nächsten Morgen schon wieder vier Plätze belegt… Da habe ich mir den Wecker auf „kurz vorm Hähne krähen“ gestellt und früh angefangen zu stricken und zu stricken und zu stricken.

Three over the course of one day, the next morning already four places occupied again… So I set my alarm clock to „too early“ and started knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting.

Als ich fertig war mit dem zweiten Socken, da waren noch sechs Plätze frei und ich musste noch Fotos mit gut erkennbaren Details machen. Auch deswegen war ich so früh aufgestanden, damit ich die fertiggestellten Socken bei Tageslicht fotografieren konnte. Die Fotos für die Qualifying Runde habe ich nachts um 11 Uhr gemacht. Es war sehr schwierig bei Kunstlicht Bilder zu machen, bei denen die Jury genau sehen kann, dass keine Fehler gemacht wurden.

When I was finished with the second sock, there were six places left and I still had to take photos with clearly visible details. I had got up so early especially for this reason, so that I would finish in daylight. I took the photos for the qualifying socks at 11pm and it was very difficult to take pictures in artificial light where the jury can decide that no mistakes were made.

Jetzt sind noch zwei Plätze frei. Ich hätte mir also noch etwas Zeit lassen können, aber das wusste ich ja vorher nicht. Es sind jetzt noch zwei Tage und 5 Stunden bis zum Ende dieser Runde (siehe Bild) und niemand weiß genau, wann es weitergeht. Die Anleitung für die nächste Runde kann schon nach einer halben Stunde kommen oder nach zwei Tagen erst. Von dem Moment, wo die Anleitung per Mail kommt, zählen wieder zwei Wochen, aber diesmal sind nur 30 Plätze frei in der nächsten. Ich habe ja vorher gesagt, wenn ich Glück habe komme ich in dritte Runde – mehr weiß ich hoffentlich nächste Woche.

Now there arestill two seats left. So I could have taken some more time, but I didn’t know that before. There are two days and 5 hours to go until the end of this round (I copied a screenshot of the „official clock“) and nobody knows exactly when the next round will start. The pattern for the next socks can come half an hour later or after two days. From the moment these instructions are sent by mail, another two weeks count, but this time only 30 places are available for the next round. I said before, if I’m lucky I’ll get into the third round – hopefully I’ll know more next week.
